‘Survivor: Heroes v. Healers v. Hustlers’ Season 35 Episode 2 Betting Odds

–This is the 35th season for CBS’s reality show.

–’Survivor’ was one of the early pioneers of the reality TV genre.

–’Survivor: Heroes v. Healers v. Hustlers’ Episode 2 airs on Wednesday, October 4 at 8:00 PM Eastern.

Not to toot my own horn, but I’m getting pretty good at this reality TV odds thing. The first episode of ‘Survivor: Heroes v. Hustlers’ is in the books and we’ve already got our first elimination. 46 year old former Olympian Katrina Radke was kicked out after a unanimous vote after her tribe finished last in the first immunity challenge. She cast *her* vote for Ashley Nolan, a 26 year old Florida lifeguard. And guess who I had favored to be eliminated from Episode 1 at +500 odds? Anyone? Anyone? Yep–it was Ms. Radke. I didn’t have any real basis for that other than intuition. You watch enough reality shows and you start to peg which contestants will be contenders and which ones won’t.

I’m really pleased with myself for this one because the early episodes on shows like ‘Survivor’ and ‘Big Brother’ are tough to handicap. Shows like ‘Dancing with the Stars’ are a bit easier since there’s some logic involved–you can figure out who has had dancing experience in real life, who is used to performing live before big crowds, etc. On a show that features ‘civilians’ rather than celebrities all you have is a flimsy bio to go on. And as much as I hate to quote myself (actually, I don’t) even these shows are getting more predictible and formulaic. Here’s what I wrote in my season preview about the cast of ‘Survivor: Heroes v. Healers v. Hustlers’:

Thankfully, the tribes won’t be called ‘Heroes’, ‘Hustlers’ and ‘Healers’–they’ll have properly Survivor-esque team names broken down accordingly: Levu Tribe (Heroes), Yawa Tribe (Hustlers) and Soko Tribe (Healers). Other than these arbitrary designations the cast looks like a typical ‘Survivor’ group–they’re primarily in their late 20’s and 30’s though the actual age range goes from a low of 23 to a high of 46. There’s the usual assortment of buff athletic dudes and chicks you’d like to see naked complete with multi-ethnic inclusions to break up what would otherwise be overbearing whiteness. There’s a couple of geeky guys and a couple of housewife looking women. And, of course, there’s a ‘Cowboy Hat Guy’. I don’t think it’s required for every reality show to have a ‘Cowboy Hat Guy’ but it sure seems like it. Since the infamous Richard Hatch aka ‘The Naked Guy’ won the first season of ‘Survivor’ there have been a total of 34 winners with 20 men and 14 women claiming the prize though the last six seasons have seen gender parity with a 3-3 tie in the ‘battle of the sexes’.

I’ll start adding more episode props within the next couple of weeks. It’s hard to do those until you get a better ‘feel’ for the contestants and their individual personalities. The trend has been to act like a lunatic in the first few shows but after that people start to show their real personas. I have taken a stab at my infamous ‘next to be pixelated due to nudity’ odds though you can expect these to move a lot over the next few weeks.
