WWE Money In The Bank 2018 Pro Wrestling Betting Odds

–‘Money in the Bank 2018’ will feature stars from both WWE brands with ‘Raw’ and ‘Smackdown’ competitors represented.

–This is the 9th ‘Money in the Bank’ event and will be held at the Allstate Arena in the Chicago suburb of Rosemont, Illinois

–‘WWE Money in the Bank 2018’ will take place on Sunday, June 17 beginning at 8 PM Eastern on the WWE Network

The next WWE PPV will continue the new practice of intermingling the RAW and Smackdown brands as ‘Money in the Bank’ 2018 will take place at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois. It also poses an interesting question–can ‘PPV events’ be called ‘PPV events’ when no one is actually ‘paying per view’ to watch them? This is something I’ve been ruminating over for awhile now and it’s even more relevant in the wake of the WWE’s massive television deal with Fox and the USA Network for the weekly ‘Raw’ and ‘Smackdown’ programming. If you’re a fan of behind the scenes show biz machinations check out the latest issue of ‘The Wrestling Observer’ newsletter for all sorts of details. At any rate, RAW will remain on the USA Network in its more or less traditional Monday timeslot though Smackdown will move to Friday from 8 to 10 PM Eastern on Fox. The terms of the deals are mind blowing–the combined USA and Fox deals are worth a combined $2.2 billion to $2.4 billion over 5 years from October 2018 to September 2024.

For the time being, the major PPV events (I’m going to keep using that term for lack of a better term at the moment) will continue to appear on the WWE Network. It’s tough to get accurate subscriber figures for the WWE Network since they’re always offering ‘deals’ like .99 cents for three months. Plus, they’ll quote subscriber figures based on the viewership of big events like Wrestlemania. The latest figures are quoting an ‘average paid subscribers’ figure of 1.56 million with a record 2.12 million households during Wrestlemania.

THE PRO WRESTLING PRODUCT CONTINUES TO EVOLVE

At some point, logic suggests that the TV networks that are placing multi-billion dollar bets on WWE programming would want the best matches on their platform. The best matches would in theory at least mean better ratings and more advertising dollars. It would also make the WWE product more valuable if viewers and revenues go up. In the aforementioned latest issue of ‘The Wrestling Observer’ Dave Meltzer suggests that the company’s top financial priority now should be the Friday night ‘Smackdown’ show. He also suggests that the traditional metrics that determined financial success and failure in the pro wrestling business including live gate revenue, big show viewership, merch, etc. are now ‘small potatoes’. He continues with the analysis of the new financial landscape of pro wrestling in North America along with the assertion that ‘the biggest matches and angles should be on television since it is the leading revenue stream and reaches the most viewers’. The WWE Network is now a nice ancillary revenue stream but not on the scale of their television deals.

Will the traditional format of the pro wrestling product change dramatically? Based on the numbers at play it’ll have to. Historically, television was a promotional vehicle to get people to come to the Atlanta City Auditorium, the Columbia Township Auditorium, Olympic Auditorium, etc. to watch the live events. Thus the propensity toward wrestling shows during the 1970’s heavy on ‘squash matches’, promos and angles. During the ‘Monday Night Wars’ between WCW and WWE during the late 1990’s, TV ratings became an important metric–arguably *the* most important metric–but the basic dynamic of the product remained the same. There were more competitive matches on television but the promotions were in a continuous ‘build’ toward the next PPV event. Over the past almost two decades television has continued to grow in importance and big matches, title changes, etc. have become more commonplace. Even with new platforms such as the WWE Network the same premise continues to date–there might be *more* significant stuff on TV but the focal point remains the ‘Big 4’ PPV events and in particular Wrestlemania. At this point, however, this is as much due to ‘tradition’ as anything else.

So what’s next? I’d like to think that there’s still a place for ‘big events’ with stacked cards but at some point this could go by the wayside with the most significant matches just interspersed with the rest of the weekly television programming. However it plays out, these are interesting times for the business of professional wrestling.

Here are the odds for the 2018 WWE ‘Money in the Bank’ PPV. These are the confirmed matches at the time of this writing but since there’s a lot to suggest that another match or two will be added these will be updated at least once before the weekend of the event:
