Serena Williams Baby Betting Odds

–Serena Williams has confirmed through a PR rep that she’s expecting her first child.

–Williams is 20 weeks pregnant which means a September birth.

–She’s taking the rest of 2017 off but plans to return to competitive tennis in 2018.

Serena Williams has done it all in the sport of tennis. Her 23 Grand Slam titles are a record and she’s been considered the best in the world for over a decade. Recently, however, she confirmed through a PR rep a very important ‘first’–her first child. She hasn’t made a public statement beyond this and a Snapchat photo of herself standing sideways with the caption “20 weeks”. She later deleted the photo but based on her appearance 20 weeks pregnant would be very likely. That would mean a September due date.

Williams announced late last year that she was engaged to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. She hasn’t played tennis since January when she won the Australian Open. Williams withdrew from her next two scheduled tournaments citing a knee injury. Her plan is to take the rest of 2017 off but she plans to return to competition in 2018 though she hasn’t provided any specifics. WTA CEO Steve Simon released a statement congratulating Williams and looking forward to her return:

“We’re excited for Serena. This is wonderful news and we wish her the very best. We’ll look forward to seeing her when she’s back competing again.”

The question now becomes what level will she be competing at when she returns. She’s 35 years old and it’s not easy to regain competitive form physically and mentally after time off, let alone time off for a pregnancy. Then again, if anyone can do it it will be Serena. She’s a uniquely talented athlete that has been able to maintain her competitive edge despite the myriad distractions of superstardom.
