‘America’s Got Talent’ Season 12 Semifinals Week 2 Betting Odds

–’America’s Got Talent’ has returned for its 12th season on NBC.

–This is the second of two semifinal rounds.

–Two ‘AGT’ shows will air this week–Tuesday, September 12 and Wednesday, September 13 at 8 PM Eastern Daylight Time.

The first of two ‘America’s Got Talent’ semifinals is in the books with eleven acts going into the round and just five advancing to the finals. The second semifinal round is set for September 12 with 12 acts vying for five positions in the finals. One act was previously eliminated–that would be the Pompeyo Family Dogs who have been ‘gifted’ into the semifinals as a ‘judge’s choice wild card’. Historically, the wild card acts haven’t fared particularly well though the Pompeyo Family Dogs could be an exception. The vibe when they were eliminated was one of a minor shock and they’re well liked enough for the judges to bring them back. Then again, they weren’t well liked enough to make it through without this gimmick. As you’ll see in the updated odds below I don’t think they’ll make it to the final round.

Speaking of dogs, one did make it to the finals in the other semifinal round. Sara Carson and Hero not only made it to the finals but clearly have made an impression on ‘AGT’ impresario Simon Cowell, who got on stage and literally begged the other judges to send them through to the next round in the early weeks of the competition. Carson is a brutally talented dog trainer of considerable renown already. The fact that she’s smoking hot probably wasn’t lost on Cowell nor is it lost on me. Check her out at an ‘afterparty’ following the semifinals–the pro TV makeup types have obviously done her over and if you didn’t know better you’d think she was a supermodel cohort of Heidi Klum.

REALITY CHECK

The reality, however, is that Sara Carson and Hero probably won’t win. The competition has been completely taken over by precocious 12 year old singer/ventriloquist Darci Lynne Farmer. It’s easy to see why she’s become the prohibitive favorite. She’s not like a lot of other lovable moppets who struggle through songs and get by because they’re kids. She’s already an accomplished entertainer. I’m far from a mark for little kids–in fact, I really dislike most of the kids that appear on these reality shows. I also find ventriloquists somewhat off-putting. Farmer somehow makes it work and even as an adult it’s possible to enjoy her act on its own terms and not just because she’s a kid. I’m not exactly sure where you go with her skill set but no doubt she’ll find a way to make it work and become a huge star.

By now, you’re probably familiar with the rules and ‘gimmicks’ of the live shows. The ‘Judge’s Choice’ gives one act the chance to advanced based exclusively on a vote of the panel. Each judge picks one act and the one with the most votes goes through to the next round. The ‘Dunkin’ Save‘ is a gimmick sponsored by Dunkin Donuts that gives one low scoring act a chance to remain in contention. Three acts are announced as ‘eligible’ for the ‘Dunkin Save’ during the results show and the one that receives the most votes from viewers gets the reprieve.

Here’s the updated odds to win ‘AGT’ as well as for the second semifinal round:
