2020 Presidential Election Betting Odds

– Donald Trump still favored to win re-election in 2020.

– Catherine Cortez Masto, Tim Kaine and Cory Booker are Democratic Party favorites.

– Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders not given much of a chance in 2020.

We haven’t reviewed the 2020 Presidential betting odds since a few days after the 2016 Presidential Election. Since then, the electoral landscape has changed very little. The people that like Trump and voted for Trump *still* like him and will probably vote for him again. The people who voted for Hillary Clinton (plus quite a few people who didn’t bother to actually go vote for her) still detest Donald Trump and are in denial about why they lost and he won. The intelligent 50% of the nation didn’t vote and don’t care.

So far, the Democratic Party has kept making the same boneheaded mistakes that allowed Trump to win in the first place. They remain convinced that the entire nation–will get on board if they just continue their shrill and unfocused onslaught of rage against Trump, everyone he associates with and everyone that voted for him. The incredulity that ‘deplorables’ actually have the temerity to disagree with them hasn’t changed. There’s no strong counter-message to explain *why* people should have the same degree of venomous hate for Trump that they do. Trump is vulnerable on countless issues that could actually get Libertarians and non-voters to cross the aisle but to date the Democrats have ignored this fact.

The biggest problem for the Democrats is their refusal to accept the fact that Hillary Clinton lost the 2016 election because reasonable people think she’s sleazy and many of the demographics that came out strong for Obama had no interest in voting for such an arrogant, entitled and generally unlikable candidate. It’s as if the entire party is allergic to the concept of ‘learning from their mistakes’. It’s really worse than that–there’s no acceptance of responsibility for the outcome of the election whatsoever. They quickly exhausted the usual excuses out of the electoral denial playbook–voter fraud, Wall Street machinations (which makes no sense as Hillary was the overwhelming choice of Wall Street elites) and vague suggestions of racial intimidation. Finding no traction with these they’ve grasped at every downright kooky conspiracy theory they can come up with rather than accept the reality of their situation. Thus we’ve got Alex Jones-esque concepts like ‘fake news’ and Russian hackers being discussed in all seriousness among their media sycophants. The only good news to come out of the election is that the Republican Party is in equally bad shape. More and more people are checking out of the entire partisan politics paradigm and with a little luck the US Presidency will be as irrelevant as the British monarchy within the next decade.

THE USUAL GERIATRIC POLITICAL HACKS WON’T BEAT TRUMP IN 2020

Since the Democrats are in complete denial they’ve come up with little in the way of serious opposition for the 2020 election. In all fairness, it’s a few years out but given the bare cupboard of candidates they need to start establishing some new faces on the national level. The fact that many people actually *want* Hillary Clinton to run again tells you everything you need to know. Bernie Sanders remains a ‘serious option’ in the eyes of some despite the fact that he’ll be 80 years old at the time of the next election. Wanna-be native American Elizabeth Warren is inexplicably considered a serious candidate as well. The best that the Democrats have come up with in the way of ‘new blood’ is former strong arm mayor of Newark, New Jersey Cory Booker and Tim Kaine. Booker is at least fairly young and African American so he’s not straight out of political hack central casting.

There is an undercurrent of support for Nevada junior senator Catherine Cortez Masto and given the shabby state of the party at the national level she looks to be the smart choice. Good background of government experience in several areas, including as a Federal prosecutor, assistant manager of Clark County, Nevada Attorney General and Chief of Staff to former Governor Bob Miller. She’s just 52 and is very media savvy and legitimately intelligent. She’s also the first Latina to serve in the Senate. She’ll be a formidable candidate–particularly against Trump–if the Democrats can wise up and put all of their long in the tooth political hacks out to pasture where they belong.
