‘Top Chef Colorado’– Episode 4 Betting Odds

–’Top Chef Colorado’ is the title of the 15th season of the ‘Top Chef’ franchise.

–The finale of ‘Top Chef Colorado’ was filmed in Aspen during the Food and Wine Classic.

–Episode 4 of ‘Top Chef Colorado’ will air on December 28, 2017 at 10:00 PM Eastern on Bravo

Episode 3 of ‘Top Chef Colorado’ is in the books and thanks to a ‘sudden death quickfire challenge’ we ended up with two eliminations. Sent packing were Rogelio Garcia and the ‘quickfire challenge’ loser Laura Cole. Garcia was our co-third choice to be eliminated in Week 3 at +750 but Cole was a big longshot at +2500 and actually in the upper echelons of our choices to win the entire season.

Cole may have deserved better but it clearly appeared that her heart was no longer in it and her focus was elsewhere. At the start of the ‘Deconstructed Omelette’ phase of the quickfire challenge she’s seen wandering aimlessly through the kitchen carrying a frying pan, apparently hoping to find some inspiration to throw in it. She balefully admits: “I’m trying to keep my head focused on the challenge right now, but my head and heart are back in Alaska.” Her awful Denver Omlette cum French Toast was ugly and dry and that ended her up in the ‘sudden death’ phase.

SUDDEN DEATH QUICKFIRE CHALLENGE

In that phase, the bottom chefs are charged with making a perfect *traditional* omlette. Cole–by all accounts an extremely capable chef–does little more than make a mess leaving Season 15 favorite Fatima Ali to give this aside: “It’s gut-wrenching to watch such a giant in the industry doubt herself, it’s really hard.” Laura and Rogelio didn’t do much in their relegation to ‘Last Chance Kitchen’ and both were ‘officially’ eliminated from Season 15 after failing to turn in a strong performance there. The season winner of ‘Last Chance Kitchen’ earns a spot in the ‘Top Chef’ finals–sort of like the second ring in a two ring battle royal.

That leaves us with these updated ‘Top Chef’ power ratings. I’ve adapted the same format that I used for ‘Project Runway’ this season giving points for ‘High’ finishes in the elimination challenge and subtracting points for ‘Low’ finishes. It worked reasonably well for ‘Project Runway’ until the finale and was particularly effective in revealing ‘false favorites’. It might not be quite as accurate for ‘Top Chef’ due to the absence of a weekly challenge ‘runner up’ for both the winner and the elimination ‘victim’. I debated giving more emphasis to superlative and substandard performances (3 for a win, 2 for ‘High’ and -2 for ‘Low) but we’ll roll with this scoring criteria for now:

WIN = +2
HIGH = +1
IN = 0
LOW = -1

‘TOP CHEF’ POWER RATINGS THROUGH EPISODE 4

Fatima Ali: +3
Tyler Anderson: +2
Christopher Scott: +1
Carrie Baird: +1
Tanya Holland: +1
Joe Sasto: +1
Joseph Flamm: 0
Brother Luck: -1
Tu David Phu: -1
Bruce Kalman: -1
Adrienne Cheatham: -3

Nothing really revelatory so far. Christoper Scott had his first ‘Low’ of the season after two ‘High’ finishes but that’s not particularly significant. I have made Adrienne Cheatham the favorite to be eliminated in Week 4 after turning in three straight ‘Low’ finishes. In fact, the only other contestant with three of the same finish positions is Season 15 favorite Fatima Ali who has turned in nothing but ‘High’ finishes (though no main challenge wins so far). Consistency is the name of the game in the culinary profession and Ali not only had the ‘rep’ but so far has delivered and as a result she’s an even stronger favorite in our updated numbers.
