Patriots, Seahawks Among Super Bowl Futures Betting Favorites

The NFL football season seems to sneak up on sports fans every year. The 2016 preseason schedule begins on August 7 as the Green Bay Packers and Indianapolis Colts play the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. The preseason begins in earnest the following week and the NFL Regular Season will get underway on September 10.

It may seem strange to be worrying about this in early June but it’s not that far away. NFL teams begin training camp in mid-July so in a couple of weeks it’ll be only a month until NFL players and teams get back to work. Sportsbooks have already started posting Super Bowl futures odds for the 2016 season so for NFL betting enthusiasts there’s already plenty to think about.

Here’s the full rundown of NFL Super Bowl Futures Betting Odds. These odds will change often between now and the start of the season due to personnel moves and betting patterns.

Minnesota Vikings +2400
Baltimore Ravens +3400
Houston Texans +3700
New York Giants +3800
Oakland Raiders +3900

No surprise to see Tom Brady and the New England Patriots at the top of the betting board. With Bill Belichick at the helm, the Patriots are always a threat to make a deep playoff run. This season they’ll once again have to sweat out a possible suspension to quarterback Tom Brady but that will continue to be appealed until the start of the regular season.

What is interesting is to see the defending Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos so far down the betting board. There are seven teams in front of them with the Broncos just a +1900 choice to defend their title. Of course there has been a major change in the Broncos’ personnel as quarterback Peyton Manning decided to retire after his victory in Super Bowl 50. The team that the Broncos beat in Super Bowl 50–the Carolina Panthers–are the third choice on the betting board at +925.

The Seattle Seahawks are the only other team priced at single digit odds and are the second choice among Super Bowl futures bettors. They played in the Super Bowl in 2014 and with Pete Carroll as head coach and Russell Wilson as the starting quarterback look to maintain their level of excellence for a number of years to come. The Seahawks are +875 to win Super Bowl 51.

The Cleveland Browns are the biggest longshot to win Super Bowl 51. Cleveland has a long history in the National Football League but since the ‘new era’ franchise rejoined the league in 1999 they have struggled. Since then they’ve only had two winning seasons, one playoff appearance. They have parted company with Johnny Manziel and have signed former Redskins’ starter Robert Griffin III hoping that he’s not completely broken down. Cleveland finished the 2015 season with a 3-13 record and their fortunes could go downhill from here. For that reason, it’s not surprising that they’re a +22000 longshot, significantly worse than the *second* biggest underdog–the Tennessee Titans at +13000.

There are a couple of teams that have been contenders in recent years but have nosedived significantly. The San Francisco 49ers are +10000, just ahead of the Titans and far from their contender status of just a couple of years ago. The New Orleans Saints are another team that has faded badly in the mind of linesmakers. The Saints are +70000 putting them at longer odds than either the Chicago Bears or Detroit Lions.
