NBA Basketball Odds–Can Steph Curry and Kevin Durant Coexist Peacefully In Golden State?

There are few situations in sports as potentially incendiary as when a championship level team adds a superstar that is used to being ‘the man’. There’s seldom any ‘middle ground’ on how it works out. The ‘upside scenario’ is when the new ‘superstar’ finds a role within the team concept and everyone works together in hopes of winning a championship. The ‘downside risk’ is when the new superstar can’t coexist with his teammates personally or professionally. Either he’s not scoring enough, getting enough ‘touches’ or getting enough media attention or else one of the incumbent players on the roster ends up griping about the same thing. It’s a personnel move that has an extreme ‘risk/reward’ quotient.

The Golden State Warriors ripped through the regular season last year breaking a slew of records including most wins by a team in a season (73-9). This surpassed the previous record set by Michael Jordan’s 1995-96 Chicago Bulls. There was one big difference–Jordan’s Bulls won the NBA Title. The Warriors didn’t. Golden State shot out to a 3-1 lead over LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Unfortunately for the Warriors they couldn’t ‘finish the deal’ and the Cavaliers won the final three games of the series including two on Golden State’s home court en route to the NBA Championship.

Ultimately, the Warriors amazing 2015-2016 season was a disappointment. Team management didn’t take defeat quietly and added a big star to an already ‘star studded’ roster–former Oklahoma City Thunder guard Kevin Durant. Durant signed a two year deal with the Warriors in July becoming the fourth All Star on the Golden State team. The media quickly dubbed the team’s core group of stars ‘The Fantastic Four’. It’s a scary concept that a team that won 72 games last year got even better in the offseason. The ‘X Factor’, however, is the ability of the Warriors’ incumbant superstar Stephen Curry to coexist with the team’s new superstar Kevin Durant. If things go well, the Warriors will be tough to beat. If they don’t, it could be a trainwreck.
