–’America’s Got Talent’ has returned for its 12th season on NBC.
–Live shows will return on August 15. Current programs are taped auditions.
–Episode Six will air Tuesday, July 11 at 8 PM Eastern Daylight Time.
NOTE: New episodes of ‘America’s Got Talent’ will return on Tuesday, July 11. Nothing of real significance happened on Episode 5 so we’ve made a few minor updates in advance of Week 6. Judges cuts will begin in Week 7 and the action will definitely heat up from there
The SPORTS BETTING EXPERTS coverage of ‘America’s Got Talent’ will return at full power in mid-August when the live episodes begin. Current programs are taped audition footage which will narrow the contestant field down to a more reasonable number prior to the start of live broadcasts from the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.
Like most reality TV shows the rules, judging criteria and format are completely malleable. There’s no set number of contestants that will be left at the start of live broadcasts. In the previous 11 seasons this has ranged from a low of 20 in Season Two to as many as 60. The ‘Final 36’ is a common line of demarcation for the success of an act and that’s also a very likely number that will remain on August 15.
Broadly speaking, ‘America’s Got Talent’ uses the familiar reality show format that mixes the result of the judges’ evaluations with an audience response component. There are a few twists, however, that have become a recurring feature of the show but also could be changed at any time:
–The X: As you’ve probably surmised, the ‘X’ is bad news for contestants. The X is symbolic of a judge’s extreme disapproval of a performance. It operates in much the same way as the ‘gong’ on ‘The Gong Show‘. Only one judge’s ‘gong’ could end an act’s performance on ‘The Gong Show’ but on ‘America’s Got Talent’ it takes an ‘X’ from every judge. In most cases, this means that the act gets ‘the hook’ and is eliminated from further competition but there are some exceptions.
–The Golden Buzzer: The ‘Golden Buzzer’ was introduced in Season Nine and conveys god-like powers of salvation on the judges. Each judge can use one ‘Golden Buzzer’ per season but when they do here’s what happens–the act in question cannot be eliminated regardless of the number of ‘X’s’ and more significantly they advance directly to the live show. It should be noted that the host of the show enjoys this awesome responsibility along with the four judges.
–Audience Reaction: The viewing audience doesn’t have any god-like powers of salvation such as conveyed by the ‘Golden Buzzer’ but they do have the ability to influence a judge’s vote with their reaction to a performance. In actuality, since reality shows have no problem making up or modifying the rules as they go along a strong ‘pop’ from the audience can save an act from elimination.
SEASON TWELVE SPECIFICS
The host for Season Twelve is former supermodel Tyra Banks. This is her first season as host replacing Nick Cannon who had held the position for the previous eight seasons. Originally, it was announced that Cannon would be returning for Season Twelve but a nasty show biz spat between himself, NBC and the show’s producers left him on the outs. Here’s the storyline–Cannon announced in mid-February that he would be resigning as host citing the old standby ‘creative differences’. Some media wags suggested that it was a ‘you can’t fire me because I quit’ situation. Cannon had reportedly made disparaging remarks about NBC in his Showtime standup special. NBC refused to accept Cannon’s resignation and there was some speculation that he would be sued for breach of contract. Ultimately, cooler heads prevailed and the network settled on Banks.
The four judges are familiar faces on the reality show circuit and return for the second season as a group. They are Mel B (aka the artist formerly known as ‘Scary Spice’ from the Spice Girls), Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum and Simon Cowell. Klum is the only judge that hasn’t ‘shot her wad’ on the ‘Golden Buzzer’ this season. Mel B pressed it for 12-year-old singing ventriloquist Darci Lynne Farmer in the season premiere. In the second episode, Simon Cowell unleashed the ‘Golden Buzzer’ for deaf singer Mandy Harvey. In the third episode, Howie Mandel annointed 16-year-old formerly blind singer Christian Guardino. Last week, Tyra Banks thus issued forth the awesome power of the ‘Golden Buzzer’ for a dance crew known as Light Balance. As stipulated by the rules, the aforementioned quartet of contestants are guaranteed a spot in the Final 36 (or whatever number remains at the start of live programming). They are the only contestants that have thus far advanced out of the audition stage.
‘America’s Got Talent’ has been a huge ratings winner for NBC in Season 12. The show was the highest rated non-sports program of the month in June and more impressively appears to be keeping it’s audience from one week to the next. There’s a good chance that the show will receive another ratings bump once live broadcasts begin on August 15.
