Continuing on with the seemingly endless array of ‘precursor odds’ for the Academy Awards we’ll take a look at the Art Directors Guild (ADG) which will hold their 2018 awards ceremony on January 27, 2018 in Los Angeles. The ‘official’ name of the awards is the ‘ADG Excellence in Production Design Awards’. This is the 22nd annual awards presentation.

The Art Directors Guild (ADG) is a labor union and a local of the International Alliance of Theatrical and Stage Employees (IATSE). The ADG represents 2,500 film and TV professionals that comprise not only art directors but scenic/graphic artists, illustrators and set designers. The ADG was originally named the Society of Motion Picture Art Directors (SMPAD) and dates back to 1937. The group added ‘television’ to it’s name in 1967 and transitioned to its current name in 1998.

The Art Directors Guild Awards seek to “recognize excellence in production design and art direction in the film and television industries”. The ADG also maintains a ‘Hall of Fame’ to permanently enshrine the best at their craft. New members are added to the Hall of Fame annually.
