United Airlines Proposition Betting Odds

–United Airlines was in the news this week for all the wrong reasons.

–The airline’s stock price took a hit on Wednesday.

–United CEO Oscar Munoz has been criticized for his very tepid apologies in response to the crisis.

It hasn’t been a good week for United Airlines. The company has become the subject of countless Internet memes and the punch line of late night talk show monologues after video surfaced of a United passenger being roughed up as he was being removed from an overbooked plane. United wasn’t a consumer favorite before this situation and they’ve got a huge PR mess on their hands that they really haven’t begun to extricate themselves from.

In some ways, it’s odd that this situation engendered so much anger among the general public. Ever since 9/11 when the government created the ‘security theater’ that is the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) there have been hundreds of examples of heavyhanded treatment of airline travelers. Given that the TSA is staffed with personnel that would have been shopping mall rent-a-cops a generation ago and that they’re given even more of a Rambo complex via Federal Government propaganda that isn’t surprising. Yet no matter how many children, handicapped adults or grandmothers have their rights and personality dignity abused the American public responded with a big yawn. It could be that the ones that would be predisposed to complain realize that government has no accountability and decide ‘why bother’?

There’s plenty of blame to go around in the United fiasco–the FAA’s regulations governing overbooked flights, the Federal and local law enforcement thugs and to some extent the passenger himself. In this case, however, at least one of those responsible is accountable in the court of public opinion–United Airlines. While none of the government thugs or their overlords care what the public thinks of them United does and on several levels. They have to answer to the media, customers and stockholders among others. When they don’t give suitable answers they take a hit that directly impacts the bottom line. They’re not exactly a ‘sympathetic figure’ but they are subject to a high degree of accountability which the other players in the fiasco are not.

The media has focused much of their coverage on the incident itself and whether or not it was legally and ethically justified under FAA overbooking regulations. A more interesting question–what will be the longer term impact on United’s financial interests and corporate image. And what better way to consider the ‘collateral damage’ implications to United Airlines than with some proposition betting odds addressing the subject:
