‘Survivor: Game Changers—Mamanuca Islands’ Episode 7 Betting Odds

A decade or so ago every US facing offshore sports book offered odds on ‘Survivor’. That’s no longer the case so here at SPORTS BETTING EXPERTS we’re trying to ‘pick up the slack’ and cover the betting aspects of the majority reality TV shows. That means we’re getting into this season of ‘Survivor’ late in the game but since the show is now in its 34th season it’ll likely outlive all of us. The show has already been renewed through the 2017-2018 season so it’s not going anywhere any time soon.
In terms of its current popularity ‘Survivor’ is similar to ‘Dancing With The Stars‘. Many people react with surprise when they learn that the show is still on the air. Both ‘Survivor’ and ‘DWTS’ are no longer the focal point of office water cooler conversation and there’s not many ‘viewing parties’ these days. That notwithstanding, both shows bring in big numbers which is becoming more and more difficult in the increasingly fragmented media environment of the 21st century. For example, Episode 5 of ‘Survivor’s current season brought in a 1.7 key demographic rating with a 7 share. That’s roughly 8.3 million viewers which was good for 8th place in the ratings standings that week.
From an oddsmaking standpoint, I approach all reality TV shows the same way. I’m not an expert at them nor is that my job when I’m setting a betting line. I’m supposed to reflect the public perception of the betting proposition in order to set a price that brings in balanced action. This is no different than setting a price for a sporting event or a political race–I try to keep my opinion on what I think will happen (or I want to happen) out of it. With reality TV shows, there’s plenty of very passionate fans online that discuss the show and what they think will happen in great detail. These are the opinions I value and I aggregate this information in order to come up with probabilities on who the fanbase thinks will win. Once I have the probabilities, it’s a simple process to convert them into moneylines and after a few tweaks here and there to make sure that I’m offering ‘fair’ prices while still making sure that ‘the house’ turns a profit they’re ready to go.
Since the Summer months are a slow time for US based sports we’ll likely pick up some of the reality shows that air then such as ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ and ‘Celebrity Big Brother’. We may also expand and give coverage to international reality shows.
