‘So You Think You Can Dance’ Season 14 Week 13 Betting Odds

–This is the 14th season for Fox TVs ‘So You Think You Can Dance’.

–Episode 13 of ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ will air live on Monday, September 11 at 8 PM Eastern.

–Vanessa Hudgens will join Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy as judges.

Logan Hernandez and Mark Villaver were our co-favorites to be eliminated in Week 12, each priced at +300. Villaver ended up getting ‘sent off’ and now we’re down to six contestants remaining. That number will be cut down to four following Week 13’s ‘Double Elimination’ show that has a stipulation that the only criteria will be viewer voting. That means the judges’ scores won’t matter, nor will any of the dancers be able to look to a ‘save’ to keep them in contention. Unfortunately, this also means that two of these very talented dancers will be ‘deep sixed’ in a popularity contest. This is good news for Kiki Nyemchek, who was one of the ‘bottom three’ in Week 12. He’s a fan favorite so he’ll likely advance. This is bad news for Kaylee Millis, the blue haired Massachusetts native. Despite the fact that she’s a compelling dancer and a lovely girl who clearly has worked hard at her craft being ‘different’ or ‘unique’ just doesn’t get you anywhere in ‘flyover country’. She’s my personal favorite but it’s just hard to see her doing anything to win over the voting audience.

Assuming that the audience vote is on the ‘up and up’ (and that’s *always* something to be concerned about in voting based reality TV competitions) you could see two of the remaining three female dancers eliminated. That would make Koine Iwasaki the next most likely choice. Middle America’s disdain for anything that doesn’t fit into their narrow parameters of ‘familiarity’ could spell the end for Iwasaki just because she’s Asian. The United States is increasingly a very ugly and shameful place. At any rate, she’s my second choice to be eliminated. As we mentioned last week at this stage of the competition the cuts can be very difficult. They become much easier when the producers delegate it to the simple minded whims of the ‘lowest common denominator’. Another concept I’m using to price the remaining contestants is that the demographic profile of the viewing audience likely favors the male dancers. Simply put, the show has more women watching than men and I’m thinking that they’ll be more likely to want them to stay in the competition. That sounds like a simplistic concept but based on the reaction of the live audience when the ‘bottom three’ was announced last week I’m of the opinion it has some validity.

SO WHO IS THE BEST DANCER REMAINING?

Not that it really matters given the format of the show but in theory at least the best dancers should end up competing for the top prize. Here’s the problem–‘best dancer’ is a very difficult thing to quantify and particularly without a certain level of expertise in the art. The ‘eye test’ suggests that Lex Ishimoto is the most talented male dancer with Taylor Sieve likely the most gifted female competitor. They are also the only two remaining contestants without at least one ‘bottom three’ appearance this season. Kaylee Millis is the only remaining dancer with two bottom three appearances (in back to back weeks, no less) with the other three dancers each having one ‘bottom 3’ score. This all means that Kaylee Millis and Koine Iwasaki are the most likely dancers to be eliminated and Lex Ishimoto and Taylor Sieve the most likely winners. In the 13 previous seasons of the show the winner and runner up have been of the same gender on six occasions (4 male, 2 female) so it’s definitely not unprecedented. Still, I’d imagine that the producers would like to keep at least one female competitor in the running as long as possible.

The ratings for ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ have been very consistent this season, though likely somewhat lower than the producers would have hoped. They got some good news last week with an uptick in the ratings, share and viewership for Episode 11. The show turned in a 0.8 rating with a 3 share attracting 2.95 million viewers. That’s the largest viewership since Week Three when the audition show brought in 3.10 million viewers. ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ has yet to be renewed for next season so a strong showing in the stretch run could help their cause significantly. Ratings for Episode 12 were lower with a 0.6 rating, 3 share and 2.57 million viewers. Note that these numbers could (and most likely will) be revised in the next day or two.
