‘Project Runway’ Season 16 Episode 3 Betting Odds

–’Project Runway’ will feature a wide array of models this year ranging in size from 0 to 22.

–’Project Runway’ has already been renewed for two more seasons after this one.

–Episode 3 of ‘Project Runway’ Season 16 will air on August 31, 2017 at 8:00 PM Eastern on the Lifetime Network

Another elimination on Episode 2 of ‘Project Runway’ which will produce another upheaval in the betting odds. The elimination of Sentell McDonald was something of a surprise as he appeared to be a solid ‘middle of the pack’ designer who could hang around for a long time based on skill and work ethic alone. Instead, he dropped a nasty looking dress made from a tough challenge and that was that. Oddly enough, he might have been happy to get a quick elimination–he got married on the day before he left to do ‘Project Runway’.

Sentell was also likely a victim of his unassuming personality. Shawn Buitendorp was the story of Episode 2 and not in a good way–she came somewhat unglued and looked to be the most likely to end up on the ‘chopping block’. She even expressed concern about designing for a ‘larger girl’–based on the Episode 1 elimination of ChaCha not hawking the ‘party line’ that the addition of non-traditional model sizes is the best thing since sliced bread is enough to get the boot. Shawn is easily the less likable of the Buitendorp twins. Sister Claire doesn’t convey the same air of clueless entitlement but it’s doubtful that she’ll get far in the contest either. Or maybe they both will. Shawn has become the ‘heel’ of the show and there was a bit of grumbling among the ‘Project Runway’ cognoscenti after last week’s episode that she should have been the one eliminated. It wasn’t so much a show of support for Sentell but a show of disdain for Shawn.

The problem that contestants like Sentell have on most reality shows is that everyone involved is aware that there’s a significant entertainment component. No reality show wants to have a contestant group that is unassuming, hardworking and earnest. They all need a few ‘train wrecks’ to bring in the viewers. The reason that Sentell is out and Shawn is ‘in’ is that she makes for better television. The twins gimmick alone could keep them around for awhile. Most people find twins off putting at the very least but Shawn’s amazing density and unlikability makes her–and to a lesser extent her sister–a target of viewer scorn. The producers’ response to that *isn’t* to get her off as soon as possible but to milk the viewership’s negative opinion of her in hopes they’ll keep turning in to see her eventual denouement.

One more thing worth noting–Ayana Ife has received a ton of positive press over the past week:

Utah Muslim woman makes splash on ‘Project Runway’ with modesty (KUTV–Salt Lake City)

Muslim woman from Utah makes splash on ‘Project Runway’ (Seattle Times)

American Muslim woman makes splash on ‘Project Runway’ (Al Arabiya)
Meet the hijabi competing on the new season of Project Runway (StepFeed)

This type of coverage doesn’t ‘guarantee’ that she’ll win but it sure doesn’t hurt. Here’s the updated numbers for Week 3 of ‘Project Runway’:
