–Episode 10 of ‘Project Runway’ Season 16 will air on October 19, 2017 at 8:00 PM Eastern on the Lifetime Network

Season 16 of ‘Project Runway’ is by far the strangest season of any reality show I’ve ever watched. It’s downright bizarre. After two straight weeks of ‘screwjob finishes’ that made little sense you might expect things to get back to some degree of normalcy. You would be wrong. By the end of the show three designers had been eliminated including the *other* Buitendorp Twin, Claire.

Long story short, the show starts with everyone still trying to figure out what’s going on. Michael and Margarita continue their snit-fit because they didn’t win. Asked why he ran off Michael continues to whine before guest judge Yolanda Hadid shuts him down:

With everyone back on the runway, they start to hash out what’s going on: Michael says that he ran off because “I couldn’t stand here and listen to a win that I did not feel was well deserved.” Guest judge extraordinaire Yolanda Hadid says, “Are you a judge in this show or are you a participant?”

Michael and Margarita are easily the most contemptible human beings on recent reality TV and could be on the all time all star list. Poor Claire looks mortified and backstage Margarita–who has more faces than Mil Mascaras–tries to make nice:

Claire is sent backstage, and Kenya, Kentaro, and Margarita follow her shortly after. Margarita is upset by how the situation exploded and clearly starting to feel regret. In the waiting room, she tells Claire, “At the end of the day, it was a print challenge, and you had a beautiful print,” and then stares at the floor.

Michael tried to rationalize his miserable behavior, suggesting that he reacted because he stands for fair play and virtue:

On the runway, Heidi tells Michael he’s safe, and he heads back to the waiting room. Batani is sent home, but when she gets back to the room, no one even acknowledges her. Michael is apologizing to Claire for how he handled it. She wishes he would have talked to her about it and feels personally attacked. Michael tries to explain that he’s just overly passionate about design and wants everyone to play fair. And then Claire outs herself.

THE OTHER SHOE DROPS

And then….Claire confesses! Not to the ‘crime’ that caused Margarita and Michael to freak out but to having a measuring tape in her room. She’s summarily disqualified and sent home after this interrogation from Tim Gund:

“First things first: Claire, is it true that you’ve had a measuring tape in your room?”
“I have a measuring tape.”
“Is it true that you’ve been measuring garments in your room?”
“I have measured a tank top and I have measured the crotch of a pair of pants.”
“All right, Claire, we must rescind your win and send you home.”.

Claire could have been sick of dealing with the rest of these miserable people. To be fair, having a measuring tape and measuring garments is against the rules but much in the same way that underage drinking is ‘against the rules’ at every college in America. It happens anyway and only the most miserable narc in the world rats out other students for ‘underage drinking’. Michael claims that it was never his intention to get her kicked out which is absolute nonsense. Tim ends up waving off the entire challenge calling it a ‘no contest’. That also means that Batani-Khalfani (who had been eliminated in the challenge) gets a reprieve and *isn’t* eliminated.

ON TO THE NEXT CHALLENGE

Michael–who had just minutes before suggested that his only interest is justice and fair play–cuts a promo on Season 16 favorite Brandon Kee:

Michael, meanwhile, says in his confessional that Brandon is using Kentaro a lot and he thinks his fellow designer is “running out of ideas.” Michael, boy, did you not just learn your lesson with Claire? Stay out of other people’s business! (Also, we do not speak ill of the brother!)

Anyway, there’s the weekly challenge and proving that karma operates in mysterious ways it’s won by the contemptible Michael. Poor Batani gets eliminated for the second time in the episode–for good this time–and for some reason the judges decide to send Amy Bond packing as well. Bond had been mediocre at best this season but it’s still unclear to me why the arbitrarily decided to give two designers the boot.

As you’d imagine this has produced a big shake up in the odds. After next week’s episode I’ll cover each contestant individually and give my thoughts on their chances to win. In a strange way, this might work out well for the Buitendorp Twins. After being hated for much of the season they’ve turned a lot of the audience (myself included) and leave the show ‘over’ with the ‘Project Runway’ fanbase. One thing I do know is that the rest of the season will be far less entertaining without them:
