NHL 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs Futures and Proposition Odds
–The NHL regular season ends on Sunday, April 8.
–The Stanley Cup playoffs bring the intensity from the opening round due to the highly competitive nature of the NHL.
–The Washington Capitals are the favorite to win the Stanley Cup.
The names and teams may change but the tone of the NHL playoffs always stays the same. There’s just not a better postseason playoff in any sport. The NHL playoffs are a ridiculously competitive and intense fight to the finish between 16 teams looking to win the venerable Stanley Cup. The competitive level of the NHL is off the charts and that’s clearly evident from the start of the first round. Simply put, there are no ‘easy outs’ for any team. In the NBA, you’ll often see teams and players ‘dog it’ during the first round against an overmatched opponent. In the NHL, there just aren’t any ‘overmatched opponents’ for top teams in the first round.
The competitive level is the same but the ‘balance of power’ is definitely starting to shift. The Nashville Predators followed up a good but not great season with an insane run through the playoffs and into the Stanley Cup Finals. At this point they look completely capable of another run deep into the postseason. As of this writing, the Predators have won 10 straight and are 1 point back of the Tampa Bay Lightning for the best record in the NHL. They’ve been tough at home (24-7-3) and on the road (20-7-6) and are currently the #1 scoring defense in the NHL (2.5 goals against per game), the #6 scoring offense (3.2) along with the #4 power play and #13 penalty kill. In the East, the Tampa Bay Lightning are 6 points up on the Boston Bruins for the best record in the division and the conference.
On the other end of the spectrum, a number of traditionally strong teams are well off their usual pace including the Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers and Chicago Blackhawks. The decline of the Hawks in particular has been shocking–Chicago has virtually no chance to make the playoffs as they sit in last place in the Central Division a whopping 31 points behind first place Nashville.
