EARLY 2017 ACADEMY AWARDS ODDS FOR BEST ACTOR AND ACTRESS

In our first article in this series we covered the ‘Best Picture’ nominations and outlined a good strategy to use when presented with a wide open futures market like we’re working with here. In general, the idea at this stage is to try and pick nominees at good value prices and not pick the winner:

WHO GETS NOMINATED AND WHO WINS?

The nomination and voting process for the ‘Best Supporting Actor’ and ‘Best Supporting Actress’ Awards are identical to the ‘Best Actor’ and ‘Best Actress’ categories. The nominees are determined by a single transferable vote from the acting arm of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (hereafter referred to as ‘The Academy’). The nominations for the 2017 Academy Awards on January 24, 2017. At that point, the full Academy membership votes on all four acting categories. Unlike the ‘Best Picture’ category which has no set number of nominees both the ‘Best Supporting Actor’ and ‘Best Supporting Actress’ categories are limited to five and have been since 1937.

So who gets nominated and wins in the ‘Best Supporting’ categories? The Academy is very mindful of its history and the symbolic importance of these awards. In general terms, the ‘Supporting Actor/Actress’ category is used to give an up and coming actor ‘legitimacy’ (eg: Benicio Del Toro in 2000 for ‘Traffic’). It’s used for other reasons as well–you see a lot of older actors get it late in their career (James Coburn in 1998 for ‘Affliction’) or actors making a ‘comeback’–or in one of the most famous examples a former ‘teen idol’ singer that went on to have a great career (Frank Sinatra in 1953 for ‘From Here To Eternity’). For that reason, you don’t see ‘repeat winners’ in the ‘Supporting’ categories. Walter Brennan won three of the first five ‘Best Supporting Actor’ awards (1936, 1938, 1940) but no one else has won more than two.

The reason that no one has more than two ‘Best Supporting’ awards is likely for design. It’s not intended for that purpose. It can be used as a de facto lifetime achievement award but more typically it is a ‘gateway’ award whereby an up and coming actor first receives validation and then moves on to roles (and hopefully nominations for these roles) better suited for the ‘Best Actor’ and ‘Best Actress’ categories.

Once we finish running through the categories we’ll try and find some value positions in these early odds markets:
