‘Big Brother’ Season 19 Week 5 Betting Odds

–CBS has renewed the long running ‘Big Brother’ reality show for a 19th and 20th season.

–’Big Brother’ is a spin-off of a Dutch TV series of the same name.

–’Big Brother’ airs Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday on CBS TV.

The events of the last week underscore why it’s not always easy to set odds on reality television. More about that in a moment. The latest ‘Big Brother’ houseguest to be sent packing is Dominique Cooper. Cooper was eliminated by unanimous vote which means that she’ll finish 13th. I think.

I equivocate on Ms. Cooper’s final ranking because of a twist in the show that I hadn’t factored into the linesmaking process–the ‘Battle Back’ episode. Basically, the first few houseguests that get evicted compete in a special competition with the winner getting back into the game and back into the house. This twist was added to last year’s competition and the producers thought it should return. Here’s Executive Producers Allison Grodner and Rich Meehan:

“Viewers responded well to the Battle Back last year so we thought we would try it again this summer, but with a twist. We approach every season differently and whether or not we want to being back evictees.”

Cody Nickson won the ‘Battle Back’ competition and is now back in the house. So did he finish 14th? Not technically, since he can now go on and win the show. The problem with this is that ‘Bookmaking 101’ dictates that anything that happens after the bet is graded that changes the outcome doesn’t matter. For example, if you bet on the USC Trojans to win the National Championship in college football in 2004 that’s what happened for betting purposes. Football fans know that the USC 2004 Championship was vacated in 2011 due to shenanigans related to Reggie Bush. You can’t dig around your attic and pull out a ticket on Auburn–the Tigers went 13-0 in 2004 and finished second in the polling–and try to cash it 7 years later. Nor do you have to send your sportsbook a check for the winnings you may have received on USC in 2004.

So Nickson was the fourth contestant eliminated meaning that he finished in 14th place. I haven’t exactly figured out what to do now that he’s back in the game. I’ll might have to add him back into the odds and I guess I’ll set up a market for another elimination place with an asterisk. Alternately, I could pretend he doesn’t exist for wagering purposes. He was graded 14th and under this scenario I’d keep the odds as they are and would just ‘skip’ Cody when he’s eliminated again. I’m leaning toward the latter but want to consider the implications of doing so. I’m going to think about it for a week to figure it all out and to see how things shake out on this week’s episodes. Cody’s return could change the dynamic of the game–his in-house main squeeze Jessica Graf holds the ‘Halting Hex’ which means she can stop one of the next three live evictions. It also means that the two could make life difficult for Paul Abrahamian who currently ranks among the favorites to win.

The sum total of all of this? The odds below have been updated based on Dominique Cooper’s departure but do not factor in Cody Nickson’s return. I’ll figure out a way to handle that by next week.

‘Big Brother’ continues to kill it in the ratings though the viewership numbers for the most recent shows were slightly weaker than the previous three show weekly ‘set’. Sunday, July 16 saw the show do a 1.8 rating and an 8 share with 5.95 million viewers. The Wednesday show did a 1.9 rating/8 share with 6.19 million viewers. The Thursday show did another 1.9 rating with a 7 share attracting 5.96 million viewers. Currently, ratings aren’t available for Friday’s special ‘Battle Back’ episode. As promised, I’ve added a few ‘Week 5’ props including several based on the TV ratings:
