37th Annual Golden Raspberry Awards aka ‘The Razzies’ Betting Odds

–The Golden Raspberry Awards, better known as the ‘Razzies’ recognize the ‘worst in film’.

– The first ‘Razzie Awards’ were held in 1980 making this the 37th year.

– ‘Razzies’ are awarded in nine separate categories.

There are plenty of award ceremonies every year that honor the best films and most accomplished individual performances. There are specialized awards handed out by professional organizations that recognize everyone from actors and directors to lighting and sound specialists. Every major critics organization has their own awards ceremony as do most foreign countries. There’s no shortage of opportunities for the entertainment industry and media to celebrate the apex of cinematic achievement. The biggest and most prestigious of these is the Academy Awards–the 2017 awards ceremony will take place on February 26, 2017 in front of a worldwide audience.

At the other end of the spectrum you’ll find the ‘Golden Raspberry Awards‘, informally known as the ‘Razzie Awards’ or just plain ‘Razzies’. The Razzies are held every year the day before the Academy Awards and recognize the nadir of last year’s crop of movies and the performances therein. ‘Nadir’ is a SAT word that means ‘the worst’ and that’s exactly what the Razzies ‘celebrate’. From inauspicious beginnings as part of a pot luck Oscar party at the home of Los Angeles publicist John J. B. Wilson the Razzie Awards have endured and even grown to the point where most film buffs recognize their status as the ‘bizarro world‘ counterpart to the Academy Awards. Or to quote E-Online, the Razzies have become ‘the foremost authority on all things that suck on the big screen.

THE PROCESS OF FINDING HOLLYWOOD’S WORST WORK

The Razzie Award itself is a statue with a ‘golf ball sized raspberry’ sitting atop a Super 8 film reel and spray painted gold that the organizers refer to as ‘Tinsel Town’s Tackiest Trophy’. It’s presented to the highest vote getter in nine categories that cover the worst films and performances of the year. Honestly, it’s hard to do any better than the Razzie Awards’ own press release at detailing the scope of the categories: ‘Annually presenting Dis-Honors for Worst Achievements in Film since 1980 in categories ranging from the obvious (Worst Picture, Actor and Actress) to the obtuse (Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel and Worst Screen Couple)‘. There are also special awards created for some years designed to highlight a particularly onerous trend in the movie business. For example, in 1998 the Razzies offered a ‘Worst Movie Trends of the Year’ category won by the trend of ’58 year old leading men wooing 28 year old leading ladies’. In 2005, there was a category for ‘Most Tiresome Tabloid Targets’ won by ‘Tom Cruise, his baby, Katie Holmes, Oprah Winfrey’s couch and the Eiffel Tower’. There’s also been award categories to recognize the worst films and performances of each decade as well as for the Razzies’ first 25 years. Sylvester Stallone managed to win the worst actor of the 1980’s *and* the 1990’s (the 1990’s ‘honorific’ was dubbed the ‘worst of the century’).

Taking a page from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences playbook the Razzies also have their own version of the ‘career achievement award’ as well as other awards to commemorate performances ‘not covered by the Razzie’s other categories’. The ‘Worst Career Achievement’ award has been given five times–to Ronald Reagan (1981), Linda Blair (1983), 70’s disaster film auteur Irwin Allen (1985), ‘Bruce the Rubber Shark’ from ‘Jaws’ (1987) and director Uwe Boll (2009). There’s another type of career achievement award that has been given since 2014 called the ‘Razzie Redeemer Award’ which is presented to a past winner or nominee that has ‘crossed over’ into more respectable cinematic work won by Ben Affleck (2015) and Sylvester Stallone. Razzies’ founder John Wilson has indicated that the award is unlikely to be presented this year and observers speculate that it ‘might be discontinued’.

The nominees and winners are selected by the membership of the ‘Golden Raspberry Foundation’. Unlike the exclusive Hollywood professional guilds and the ‘Academy’ it’s not surprising that the ‘Golden Raspberry Foundation’ is significantly more egalitarian–as in membership is open to anyone willing to pay $40 a year. There are no other qualifications and voting members aren’t required to watch the films are performances in question. Needless to say, this isn’t something that the nominees, recipients and the more humorless members of the entertainment media find amusing. Only a dozen award winners have shown up in person though they include some big names like Ben Affleck, Tom Selleck and Sandra Bullock. Most Razzie winners just ignore the event entirely. The same can’t be said for some of the self important blowhards of the entertainment media who take issue with the ‘open door policy’ of the Golden Raspberry Foundation, the lack of intellectual rigor in selecting the ‘worst’ performances and what they see as transparent publicity seeking. Since the Razzie organizers characterize the entire process as satirical and are up front about ‘publicity seeking’ most criticisms from the ‘serious film media’ are just scolds that can’t take a joke.

The 37th Annual Golden Raspberry Awards–aka the ‘Razzies’–will take place on Saturday, February 25 which is the day before the 89th Annual Academy Awards. Here are the SPORTS BETTING EXPERTS betting odds in all nine categories:
