2017 British National Television Awards Odds

–The National Television Awards (NTAs) is a British TV Awards Show first broadcast in 1995

–It’s analogous to the Emmy Awards in the US except the public votes on the outcome

–The 2017 NTAs will take place on January 25, 2017 at London’s O2 Arena

The best way to describe the British National Television Awards (NTAs) to an American audience–it’s a hybrid of the Golden Globes, the Emmys and the People’s Choice Awards. It has a bit of a ‘loose’ feel like the Golden Globe Awards and in contrast to the far ‘more serious’ Academy Awards. It’s got a veneer of prestige like the Emmy Awards but the votes of the general public determine the outcome in each category. The event was first broadcast in 1995 and has become a fixture on the ITV Network, Great Britain’s #2 network in terms of audience behind the BBC. It’s hosted by Dermot O’Leary and takes place at the London O2 Arena. Scarlett Moffatt has signed on to be a backstage presenter for the 2017 awards–she recently won the 2016 incarnation of the ‘I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here’ reality show. The NTAs are also unlike many of its awards show counterparts in that the general public can buy tickets to watch the proceedings live in the 20,000 seat arena.

It’s not the most prestigious television awards show in Great Britain–that would be the BAFTA Television Awards which will take place on May 14, 2017. The National Television Awards have earned their part in the UK entertainment landscape for the way they involve the general public and their general appearance of running a ‘legit’ voting process. The nomination process begins with the publication of a ‘longlist’ in each category based on BARB ratings (basically the UK equivalent of Nielsen ratings). This group is narrowed down to a ‘shortlist’ in early January with the winners announced at the National Television Awards show held at the O2 London and televised on ITV. The public casts their votes via the mail and telephone with most of the activity now taking place online. The veracity of the process is monitored by an independent adjudicator and the results are reported extensively in the British media.
